Pre-88 front brake pistons are ceramic.
I found a pair of hopelessly-seized calipers in storage, and decided to strip the steel from them before sending those & a bunch of other scrap off for recycling. I started to work on the rust glob which vaguely resembled a piston, and off pops a metal cap to reveal ceramic underneath.
I always assumed that they were a steel piston like the rears (without the e-brake gear of course).

Correction...
some
pre-88 front calipers have ceramic pistons. I pulled a set from our 87 donor and they had steel pistons.
