Hi,

 I am relatively new to the forum (other than lurking) but I have a question...

 Where in the Ottawa area can I get general repairs done on a Fiero other than a dealership, OR if there is a dealership with parts for a 20 year old car...

Specifically:

1) <same as everyone else I suspect> passenger side door 'chattering' or needs to be rehung. i.e. knocks when going over bumps with window down.

2) New brakes. I am looking for ideas here. I have 17" rims and would like to add much better than stock brakes. Good enough for the track (Luskville) with a 3.8 SCII

3) Someplace to install an entirely new interior. i.e I am going to order new seats, dash, etc but I don't feel handy enough to do a job worthy of my car. Labour only.

4) New paint job. Currently Black with the oh so 80's gray bottom. Looking at a chameleon paint scheme, possibly black cherry/black combination (or other ideas?)

5) **Most important of all** someone who can work on the 3.8.. biggest issue has been exhaust leaks with custom headers. Got stage 8 fasteners installed and seems to be ok now. But general maintenance if required by someone who knows the 3.8 SCII's and it seems like there are many here!

If someone were in Ottawa that would be the perfect option since I am in Ottawa.

This is a DIY job if you're up for it.  Replacement striker bolts, and hinge pin/bushing kits can be picked up at Canadian Tire.  It's an awkward, patience-sucking job if you leave the door attached to the car but I've done it with hand tools at about 2-3 hours per door.  Beats the hell out of paying a shop for those 2-3 hours x $70, just to settle a door rattle!   Shocked

There is no hard data out there which I'm aware of when it comes to the stopping power of brake upgrades.  Evaluation of the various options all tends to condense into a simple statement of "it's better than stock".

There are a variety of "junkyard" upgrades available, which usually involves bolting on one or more brake components from another car with little or no machining required.

There are also two or three shops in the USA which will ship you a complete, bolt-on kit if you prefer to go that way.

For the kits Google West Coast Fiero, V-8 Archie, and The Fiero Store.  A variety of DIY/junkyard solutions can be found if you get friendly with the search tool on Pennock's Fiero Forum.

Another DIY job to be honest.  It's just bolts, clips, and common hand tools.  That being said, many auto glass shops also do interior work.  Mississippi Auto Glass in Carleton Place for one.

Are you looking for color ideas, or a paint shop?   Undecided

For general mechanical work I would recommend tracking down a small, independently run shop.  If you're near the west end of things and don't mind a little drive, check out Tim's Service Center in Carleton Place.  Tell 'em that Don from Scotch Corners sent you, and they'll probably get a chuckle out of it.  Wink

Thanks for the info.

I will check in to all of those options mentioned, especially with the shop in Carleton Place. I don't mind going anywhere in the Ottawa area.

As for paint, I am looking for a shop that can do a good paint job. Basically I am looking for a really high quality paint job.

If anyone has any paint ideas however, I'd be interested as well.

Both have good reps on most of the car boards. 

Get a couple of quotes and see how the guys are to deal with.  It's worth dealing with a shop you don't need to fight with about everything.

I'll have lots more questions for sure.. in the meantime I am off to order some seats and brakes.  Grin

We dropped off our 84 in for a post-rack rebuild wheel alignment yesterday... When we picked it up today, apparently a 87 fastback with a 3800 conversion had been in for some exhaust work and a few other things.   Grin

So far so good... I have been doing some 'spirited' driving to see if the exhaust leaks come back and so far all is good.

I have a few other odds and ends to fix still including a sometimes squealing Supercharger belt but so far I am very happy with the service at Tim's.
