Good evening Guys,

I was coming back from Quebec City and when I got in Hawksberry the clutch started to slip badly.  I was lucky to make it back home with the car in the condition the clutch was getting as I was getting closer to home.  So my question is there anybody available to help me change the clutch on the weekend?  Any help would be MUCH appreciated!!

OH NO!

Clutch is not cool! I buy my clutches from Ottawa Clutch usually and they get me a pretty good deal. I'm assuming you have a clutch though already!

Can you replace a clutch in the Fiero without pulling the engine?

I'd help but I got my own can of worms with my car right now! I have an engine hoist and stand if you need to borrow them!

Good Luck and glad you made it home!

I'm located in Hull on Lacasse St. or now its called Gabriel-Lacasse st cause of the city merge.  There was also a similar question posted on the pennocks forum and somebody replied saying it takes a couple of hours with a cherry picker...almost seems unreal....  here is the link....

Again, if anyone has anything to help me out......Iv heard people remove the drivers side suspension, to removing the exhaust manifold in order to get to the clutch.....anybody have other techniques? Huh

Yup.  With some wiggling and loosening of various parts, the transmission can be removed through the left wheel well.

I've checked my haynes manual, and according to that book I dont think I have a dead clutch.  The clutch rattles when I start off in 1st gear and then starts slipping in 2nd and then does it less and less as I got in 3, 4 and 5th.
when I got up a hill going 110 is slips occationally and I have to go down to 100 or so.......
I noticed when I left quebec city that the clutch was hard to shift for about 5min.......and when I got to hawksberry I was able to shift in gear until I got to a slower speed......that is when the rattling started on first gear.  Are these symptoms part of a dead clutch?

yes, she is dead.
Get a new one from CTC. We can all get together and help you replace it. all we need is an engine hoist, a few rachet sets and some jackstands. it can be done in a day.

This is the little JP who live in my backyard right?

cheers!

Just buy a new one.....I got mine from ottawa clutch for 118 bucks! I have a manual action clutch though...there is no master or slave its just a cable and a big fat king-kong spring so yours may be more expensive but really, not that much more.....maybe like 150 bucks and someone on here is for sure gonig to get you a deal!

Just buy a entire new kit with thrust bearing, slave, new lines and clutch!

You gotta pull my whole engine to do the clutch!

ah man you guys are the best!

Yep Eric, I live a 5min walk from you pretty much...
Bootmachine offered an engine hoist so I guess we are all set.  All we need is a place to get together to change it.  I can prob make it to Eric's place with the car.

Should I buy a new flywheel?
the best day would be sunday seeing as it is suppose to be nice all day.

would there be anything that I should change besides the clutch, release bearing and flywheel?  maybe mounts?

My place is no good. Sad  it's a condo. they freak if I just park crookid. Sad

You need a clutch kit.. since you have the 2.5, get the regular kit from CTC. about 180 I think.

Get a new engien mount and 2 new tranny mounts (approx $20 each at best price auto: 746-BEST).

chances are the cradle bolt are seized. Order new cradle bolts from GM (all 4 of them) and new cradle bushings (just the stock ones)

And you are all set! Smiley  a copuple of cans of engine cleaner while you are at it. You can clean and fixup the areas you normally have no access to.

Cheers!

Never heard of 'em, but methinks I'll keep this number handy.  I'm planning on replacing my tranny & engine mounts over the winter...

If they can get a set of polyurethane mounts at a decent price, they get my money.   Otherwise WCF and Canada Customs gets it.   Roll Eyes

I have an old barn we can use to do the work in....if you can get there. Its about 10 mins outside of Kanata in dwyer hill!

My engine hoist is not a tradition lift...its just a gear chain hoist...at the barn a have a place to hook it to the roof and I have a load of chain so it just comes straight up and out!
