I have a serious problem with my new Formula!  Symptoms are as follows;
1. It burns an entire tank of gas in less than 150km's...
2. Very bad smell in the car which make my eyes sore/water! Smell is worse when stopped at a light and the windows down....I think!
3. "Service engine soon" light is on!
4. I even get the smell if the windows are up......but the vent is open for air!  A/C doesn't seem to be working even though it has recently been converted!  Not sure if this would be related....perhaps it's leaking causing a smell???

Any thoughts of what my be my problem would be greatly appreciated!  I have only driven the car 3 times since purchasing it and would like to make the next drive a little more enjoyable!  Keep in mind this car has an original 2500 km's only on it! The engine runs strong and as new...perhaps a minor rough idle, but goes like stink off the line and at any other speed/time! Any help....please & thanks...

Have the code read, or use the paper clip trick at least to read the blinking light.

What is the smell?  Fuel?.  A/C (nasty and sticks in the back of your throat)?

With that mileage it must be dumping fuel like crazy.  No leaks I assume.  Cold start injector on an 88?  Stuck fuel injector...... what do the plugs look like?

Sounds to me like your fuel injectors are stuck open.  And your A/C seals are cooked (you shouldn't use 134a on an old system the seals just weren't designed for particles that small).

How was the car parked.  Did it have old gas in it? How old?  Usually you have to replace the fuel injectors, the fuel pressure regulator, the fuel lines, and the fuel pump.

thanks for the replies so far....

Aaron, the car was owned by a collector which had over 20 low mileage cars on hand at the time I purchased it!  I assumed he knew what he was doing as far as fuel and did not ask the question.  The car was used once a year to travel from Windsor to London and return....about 100 km's per year.  The fuel tank was full when I took possesion of the car and I almost ran it dry the first time I went for an evenings drive.  I filled it that night with highest octane gas and last night went through that entire tank! Will hooking the car up to read codes help in this case?  Again, keep in mind the car has original wires, plugs, air filter, etc.....perhaps a tune up is in store as well!!!  Do you work on other peoples cars?  Thanks again...

It's interesting that it passed clean air if as I think it's burning way too much fuel.  They are really laxed standards for 88 though, were your HC high?  I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you likely still have a fuel delivery problem.

I do work on other peoples cars and this is the sort of things that interests me.  Working for a fellow car enthusiast on a rare or interesting problem.  Your best to bring the car to me but I can also make a house call.  I charge $22/hr for club members(that's you) and $67/hr for corporate problem solving.  Let me know if you are interested.

Hey Aaron,

Yup, I'm interested!  Let me know when is good for you and where?  I'm in and out of town for the next 3 weeks with family vacations and then off work for a few months to work on my house! So anytime that's convenient for you should work for me!  thanks
