Title: "A work in progress" or the story of the Thestral Fiero
Post by: falcon_ca on February 02, 2009, 01:03:54 pm
Hi everybody

I am Fiero owner from northern Quebec and I am redonning a Black Formula and adding some modifications.

Because more we are, better are the ideas, I would like to share my work with you.

First off all please be patient with my English, it is not as good as I would like it to be.

If some of you read French or would like to some practice, I am maintening a very detailled work log, since the beginning, at Virtualshowcar (http://www.virtualshowcar.com/forums/index.php?topic=302.0). Unfortunatly the site as recently been attacked and is under re-construction. A lot of pictures are still missing. It is supposed to be back soon.

It started early spring 2007 when I decided (read: my wife said) that it will much better to have a car project than a motorcycle project. I have a very small garage so I looked for a small car but something different than a Ricer and a little bit exotic. I don’t like doing body work, so the Fiero is the perfect fit.

I bought the Formula locally,  in May 2007. It was not in really bad shape, but needed a lot of attention.

At the first look, the muffler was missing, paint was sunburned, frame has some rust (holes), slave cylinder is leaking and there is a lot of dirt, but sub-frame looks good.

First run, when driving home, find a grinding 3rd speed (synchro) and a leaking heater core.

So that is the way the “project” began.

Pictures took in May 2007

While I was in vacation, I stop by a “pick it yourself” and they had a blue 87 GT. So I took some parts in preparation for the winter.

- Starter
- Vacuum hoses
- Valves covers
- Intake and plenum
- Exhaust manifold (both no cracks)
- Engine heads
- Fuel injection rail
- 2 doors (electric windows and locks)
- 4 speakers (not stock)
- A bunch of Bolts, relay and other electric parts and other small things.

Unfortunately, the fascias, hoods, sunroof and the seats where absent or in bad shape.

The car rolled out in May 2008

Because I already had other plans for the Formula, some parts have been bought during the summer of 2008 for the next winter.  8)

Unfortunately, I had an accident at the beginning of July. I have been stocked at home for 14 weeks and my left hand will never completely recover.  :(

So I had a lot of time to think about “what will be the next move with the Formula”.

I bought a Cadillac 4.9 V8. ;)
I started to clean it and prepare it, but I need to slow down, I already have a lot of work to do this winter, the Sombral (Thestral in english, it's her name) need a new paint. I am still grabbing information.

Nice looking and thorough job - that's a lot of work - are you retired or just high energy?

By the way, where did you get the seat covers - my car could use a set like that?

Where in Northern Quebec?

Gord

No I am not retired, but I spent most of my spare time working on the Fiero. In fact winter 07-08 was very Fiero oriented.  8)

Seat cover are from IGGEE. They usually have some on eBay or go to their web site IGGEE (http://www.iggee.com/shop.cart?action=ITEM&prod_id=PON001)

I live in Chicoutimi, Saguenay. Google map (http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=fr&geocode=&q=chicoutimi,+quebec&sll=49.891235,-97.15369&sspn=26.282455,56.25&ie=UTF8&ll=48.643798,-70.740967&spn=1.680436,3.515625&z=8&iwloc=addr)

Gord,

I bought those on eBay. See item number 110347040809.  They call them "xenon HID" but they are not. They are halogen.

You just have to replace the old sealed beam. H4 bulb have the same connector than you already have on you car.

question..... how often do you get people flashing their high beams at you cause they think you are driving around with yours on?

Never, my headlights are properly adjusted. This is no worse than the "Ricers" with their HID curiously installed.

Bosch and Hella also make replacement halogen fixtures.  They do provide more light than stock, but don't have the faceted inner surface.

Everyone else's lights are so bright in a Fiero, why worry about their comfort?  >:(

I agree.

I also installed an auto dim rear view mirror. Helpfull when you are sitting at the SUV daylights level

Do the replacement lenses have a tighter focus than the old sealed beams?

I popped a 55w/90w bulb in to one of our motorcycles a few years ago, with no changes to the headlight bucket or lens.  The high beam was an incredible improvement over the stock 60w high beam, but I wouldn't have been comfortable using that 90w lamp as a low-beam without a lens change.

For my tastes, the original lens didn't have enough vertical cut-off to run that 90w light constantly.  Maybe it's motorcycle-induced paranoia, but super bright lights and small vehicles always make me think of moths and flames.  Problem is that the moth in this case (oncoming vehicles) stand a good chance of hurting the flame as much as the flame can hurt them.  :)

Interesting... I may have to look in to this one of these days.  H4 bulbs are a heck of a lot easier to change out than sealed beams, among other benefits.

Thanks for the info!

Sold my Cowl induction scoop and ordered one from FieroFiberglass (http://fierofiberglass.com/?page_id=32)

I hope it will make it up here before the car goes to the paintshop.

The larger scoop will offer more room for the hood emblem.

I have done a little modification to the rear deck lid grill

They are made of alluminum and painted black. I decided to sand the flat surface and clear them to keep the raw metal look. Found the idea on PFF (http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum1/HTML/067014-35.html).

Not bad result. I look forward to see them on the newly black painted car.

I ordered the flywheel for my 4.9 swap  :)

Now on the market to find what is the best clutch for a 4.9 + Getrag 5 speeds assembly.

I am also reading a lot about Wiring Harness. I am not sure yet if I will customize the 4.9 harness or if i will go with a special assembly of 90-92 TPI harness + 305 TBI throttle body and 7730 ECM.

Any suggestion ?

No suggestions here on the wiring harness...

On the clutch though, popular opinion seems to point to nothing above a stage III clutch if you plan on streeting the car regularly.

I know, "cleaner does not mean faster", but I believe it means "easier to maintain" and probably more reliable.

And as other already mention, "details matter" ;)

I personnaly believe "stage 3" is a little bit to much and pretty hard on the transmission.

The new V8 flywheel arrived today. :)

More expensive than expected (~450$), but it is new, and safer than a "home made". Makes me feel more confortable when I think about this heavy thing spinning at 4000 RPM at 12 inches of my back.  ;)

The car still at the paint shop.   :(

So I am working on other things put aside last winter like the "adjustable coil-over struts"

Few months ago I bought a pair of Gabriel struts at a bargain price so I decided to build my own "coil-over" to replace the Chapman at the back of the Sombral.

First thing to do is to "clean" the shock absorber, so I removed everything useless for the Fiero set-up.

(http://lh3.ggpht.com/_m72_QDJWnWI/S4mYC7Ze1GI/AAAAAAAAOHg/wWqqpWNG7JI/s288/Coil-Over%20-%2001%20-%20Strut%20Gabriel.jpg)(http://lh4.ggpht.com/_m72_QDJWnWI/S4mYEn-8fiI/AAAAAAAAOHs/coWzDrfxiKY/s288/Coil-Over%20-%2002%20-%20Strut%20Gabriel.jpg)(http://lh6.ggpht.com/_m72_QDJWnWI/S4mYEB70G6I/AAAAAAAAOHk/xxA2WVKMmqY/s288/Coil-Over%20-%2003%20-%20Strut%20Gabriel%20denudes.jpg)

I bought a set off 88 strut tops on eBay.

Next step is to buy the adjusters sleeves, springs and other hardware.

I finally choose a pair of front Ford Mustang coil over conversion kits.

The shock OD is 2 1/16, the sleeves are 2 1/4 ID, 7 1/2 high and made to support 2 1/2 springs.

The springs are 12x250

They are on their way

I also bought a new pair of upper strut mounts on PFF.

I also visited the body shop to pick-up some parts and look at the progress.
The car will be ready next week. Because it is a school, they will not have enough time  to polish the paint. I have been told that it is a required step when painting polyurethane.

I will reassemble the car and have it polish after.

Yes the boots are too tight. I installed them just because I had them. I dont think they are required.

They should not have been larger than 2 inches and they are 2 1/2.

Problem:  Bottom of the 12inches brake hit the bottom arm when suspension is under charge.

Have to modified bottom arm.  :(

I tried to correct the problem with a hammer but that is not enough, the problem also appears in curves, so the bottom control arm needs to be modified a little bit.

Are those the 88 12" rotors?

If you mean C4 Corvette 12" brakes for 88, using 88 calipers, the answer is yes.

It might be less work to put the old ball joints back in and cut the springs.

I dont think so.

A series of  well placed hammer blows, or a "massage" as Rodney Dickman told me, will correct the problem.

Make sure you check your clearance with the steering all the way left and right.

Of course, and also with the suspension fully down.

It is getting closer as the suspension goes down.

- I installed a A/C style cooling fan.
- Slightly modified lower A-Arm for big brake kit

Spring update.

I did not update this work log for a while.

Since last update I upgraded the radio bezel to an Aluminum plate similar to the gaude pod. But to keep the look, I bought one with three holes for the vents instead of 2 rectangulars. I modified and glued 3 Mazda Miata vents to fill the holes. Had to bruched the aluminum myself to make it match the rest of the dash plates.

Of course, the Sombral rolled outside at the beginning of April

Welcome to this forum dimeadozen.

I try to plan my  work a way to be able to roll from may to october.

I usually buy parts all summer long, and I do the modifications during the long nothern Quebec winter.

So, yes  I am driving it this summer, the V8 still on the stand nearly ready. I rebuilt the V6 in 07-08 so it is in very good shape and make the car fun to drive. The all around poly and rear adjustable struts make it a little bit stiff but it drives like a go-kart. I like it  :)

I am now shopping around to find a shop to rebuild the original MG2. I want to put it back in the Sombral with the V8.

I will probably order the lambo hinges sometime this summer and I am still buying few things for the V8 such as chrome wire looms or chrome flex radiator hose. It gona be good looking

It is the original Muncie Getrag from my Formula. It bolts directly to the 4.9. Same bolt pattern.

I had the synchro and all bearings changed in it, so it is tight as new.

The 5 speed Isuzu also bolts on the 4.9

Garage floor is covered with Epoxy. My son in law saved some bags after doing the floor of a water treatment plant. It is chemical resistant.

I spent a lot of time lately searching for an oil leak coming from the bottom of the engine, firewall side.

Believe it or not, I even remove the engine-transmission assembly twice and spent around 100$ in parts to finally find out that the oil came from the oil dipstick tube for which the small "O" ring was missing.

Whatever, it is now solved.

Meanwhile,  I also redone some gauges needles.
