Title: New toy! Post by: can machine on September 30, 2011, 09:26:56 pm I finally got my Grandfather's lathe. It's a 1939 13" Southbend. It needs a little cleaning up since it has not been used much in the ten years since he passed away. I also need to run some power too it.

Title: Re: New toy! Post by: can machine on October 01, 2011, 10:07:54 am It was easy to move with lots of help. My Uncle ended up bringing it up from Belleville for me and a guy down the street unloaded it for me with his Bobcat. It weighs 1600 pounds. :o
Title: Re: New toy! Post by: aaron88 on October 01, 2011, 01:17:56 pm Nice mid size gear head lath! It can use some TLC, but looks like you should be able to get .005 in accuracy out of it. And you can turn rotors on it too.
Nice catch. . Title: Re: New toy! Post by: can machine on October 02, 2011, 09:29:41 am Yes it's a mid sized swing wise, but it's the longest bed made that year at 7 feet which is nice. As for accuracy that usually depends more on the operator. ;)

I wonder if its for driveshafts? Title: Re: New toy! If by runners and guides you mean the gibbs and ways and they can be adjusted as long as there is not too much wear in one spot on the ways. The play in the spindle main bearings can also be adjusted out. The bed is seven feet but I think the max you can turn is 56" between centers. Probably more than I'll ever need but it's good to have! |
