Title: Re:swap Post by: FieroDough on February 18, 2003, 10:54:31 am Getting all my parts lined up. :) taking everything out of boxes. Seems like the garage I had lined up is falling through. :( property was sold..
Anyone have any good ideas of what we can do for a hoist and a warm place to work? If we can do 3 swaps at once in a weeked that would be great! We can have a swap sleep over! Woohoo! Title: Re:swap Post by: FieroBUZZ on February 18, 2003, 10:57:38 am Haha! I think a weekend may be a bit optimistic.
Where were you planning on mounting the pcm? Behind your seat or where the Fiero ecm is? Title: Re:swap Post by: FieroDough on February 18, 2003, 11:02:59 am were the Fiero ecm is. :)
no reason why it can't be done in a weekend. just get all your parts ready, have the wireing prepped. and a good idea of what you are doing. :) basically, you drop the craddle, remove the engine from the tranny, place new engine on the tranny, route fuel and coolant, replace cradle, connect wiering, drive off, fix as necessary. :) Title: Re:swap Post by: Boy-z on February 18, 2003, 11:22:01 am It all souds good except for that fix as necessary part I wish I could help you. I am going 3.4 myself but I will have to wait till spring. But for now I will call around and see who will do it for me and at what cost and hopefully down the road put on a turbo. So hope you find some thing.
Title: Re:swap Post by: FieroDough on February 18, 2003, 12:12:16 pm 3.4 should not be a prob bud. :) just go to any machine / engine shop (ie: Scotty's engines) with your 2.8 and a 3.4 block, tell them to rebuild the ingine in the 3.4 block and drill starter holes. Then drop it back in the fiero. :) Then you will probably need the Ford injectors and an msd ignition. :)
Cheers! Title: Re:swap Post by: fiero308 on February 18, 2003, 12:12:55 pm hi Eric
must be an exciting time - it will be for me, too, when I get there. What or how are you handling the exhaust? I am guessing that the stock 2.8 exh won't match just due to size, Murphy's Law etc. You can get flex exh pipe at Cdn Tire for fairly cheap I think; that might be the short term answer to do test run, get you to a muffler shop etc. and an assortment of adapters (just return the stuff you don't use!) and maybe that part won't be too bad.. Keep us posted; this is a really good swap! Graeme Title: Re:swap Post by: FieroDough on February 18, 2003, 12:16:27 pm I was quoted about 5 bills to get the exaust done from top to bottom on the 3800sc. So I may call my roadside service and say she ehh... won't start, yeah, that's it. :) and have it towed to the muffler shop.
still interested in mandrel bending my own. :) Cheers! Eric Title: Re:swap Post by: fiero308 on February 18, 2003, 12:29:49 pm I guess it would depend on the details of what you were going to get for the $500 - is that just an ordinary steel system? Cats? dual? What type and size pipe and muffler. Lots of variables of course.
I intend to get my mandrel bender about mid April as I won't have time to either get it or use it before then PLUS I will have some money by then from this rush of work (little important detail there....) Do you intend to go stainless? That would be a good investment I would think altho yes it is pricey. Mild steel can be coated for corrosion resistance but I can't reliable tell how good the difference is compared to SS. good luck; lots of people will be watching! :o 8) :D Graeme Title: Re:swap Post by: FieroBUZZ on February 18, 2003, 12:54:27 pm Eric, have you figured out materials and routing for the coolant and fuel lines?
I love your outlook. Then again I doubted the 5 speed would fall into place, but it did. ;D Title: Re:swap Post by: FieroDough on February 18, 2003, 01:03:47 pm coolant is very easy, I will either modify a 2.5L goose neck filler or get a in line filler adapter from jc whitney. The drivers side pretty much lines up when you use the rad hose off a 2.5L. The pass side just need to be routed using a flex hose and fastened to the chassis. The fuel lines will be high pressure fuel hoses from the pass side, under the reails near the trunk and out the middle of the engine comaprtment.
the heater core tubes need to be extended and brought to the pass side, I will also use regular mater pipe plumbing (coper tube) to extend away from the super charger belts. then attach to the rubber hoses. :) Fluids won't be a problem at all. the problem (or difficulty) relies in proper routing of the wiering. :) I want it to be neat. but that can be adjsuted and rerouted after the engine is installed. |
