Post by: 2ML67 on October 04, 2006, 10:10:28 am
Derek get a hold of me if you read this or when you get back from vacation. The valve springs did not seat you need to order #105 springs from ZZ, he said you clould return the #90's you have now. The cam is in and every thing is back together and in the car just need to change the springs and set every thing up then she will be done. Dan

Just back from LA and reading my mail and messages for the first time.  I'll order the 105's tomorrow.  Should I have them shipped directly to your place?  If so, PM me the address again.

Thanks!

Cheers, Derek

Would save a trip if they are sent directly to me. My address is
 Dan McIlmoyle
 1872 County Rd 2
 RR 2 Consecon
 KOK 1T0
Should only take me one day once the springs arrive to have her running again. Installed the fire wall insulation not the easiest stuff to work with but it should quieten things up as the old stuff was falling apart. Plus it looks so much nicer in there that I felt that the engine needed some painting to make it look better so I used some slime green paint I got from Gary to make every thing pretty for you. Dan

GREEN?!?!?!?!?!!??!

Ok.  I like green, but please don't say it is that glitter stuff Gary wants to cover himself...err, his car....in!

 ;)

Ah how did you know, Gary said this paint was very rare which should make your car more friendly to others. Dan

The "Blue Thingy" will be running "The Friendly Green Machine" engine?!?!?!

My car is going to have an identity crisis.    ::)

I ordered the 105# springs just now.  Save the box for me so that I can send the other ones back.  :)

Cheers, Derek

No problem, hey it could be worse I could have painted it pink oh wait a minute you probably would have liked that. No I actually painted a few things with some aluminum paint I had. But if green is what you want I could always change it. Dan

Pink...well....maybe during the 80's when I had a "Miami Mice" t-shirt and wore pastel coloured polo shirts with the collars up.   :-[

As for the green, save that for someone elses car.  ;)  I think Stephane's car could use some more colour.

Derek, I was cleaning  ::) and found those aero rocker panels.  If you want them, remind me to bring them down next time.  anything else you're looking for?

By the way...........  would you have a use for a non-sunroof headliner board? (no headliner fabric on it now)

Title: Re: Hey Derek
Post by: MacPhail on October 08, 2006, 01:30:45 pm
I could use the non-sunroof headliner...maybe put some fabric on it over the winter so that it is ready for when I put on that new roof I have over at Dan's right now.

I'll come by your way some time with the SUV so that I can pick the headliner up as well as the rocker panels.

Are the rockers green now and/or sparkly by chance?   :D

Cheers, Derek

PS  Back to the topic of LA...do you know how long I've stood in line for the shows this week?!  Some crazy people (not me...I only got there at 6:00 AM) camped out from 11:00 PM the night before for the Price is Right, and 4:30 AM for Ellen (I got there at 7:00 AM).

Heres a photo to give you an idea of how the insulation looks. Dan

I like.  :)

What I look forward to most is whether there is a noticeable drop in noise and heat transfer into the cabin area.

Cheers, Derek

New valve springs arrived today and she is all back together and running nicely. This thing is going to fly once the PCM is all reworked to match every thing up. Dan

Title: Re: Hey Derek
Post by: MacPhail on October 12, 2006, 08:07:16 pm
I'll take 'er easy until the PCM is done, especially with the weather we've been having (not that I'd be driving in the rain due to the leaking sunroof).

I think I'll take the Solo I driving school in the spring to better learn how to handle my car.

Next mechanical upgrade:  Brakes.   Are the Beretta's the way to go, or are they really heavy and something lighter would be better???

Cheers, Derek

I like the Beretta style they work well and are cheaper to buy than Fiero brakes. The first year my 3800SC Fiero was on the road I went through 3 sets of Fiero rotors they kept warping trying to slow down from my high speed runs. Since I changed over I have had no trouble stopping. Dan

What is the size difference between the Fiero and the Berretta's?

It's suppose to rain tomorrow, so weather permitting, I'm going to see about coming out tonight if you're going to be around.

Ah...she was fun to drive home.  :)  Ok, I took it easy and drove fairly slow, but it was still fun.  Then again, I always feel that way behind the wheel.

I can't wait to take her for a good hard drive on a nice sunny afternoon!  That'll likely have to wait for spring though.

The sound deadener makes a bit of a difference...or it could be the new cam and stuff...but it sounds like more of a deeper growl than the higher-pitched sound the engine made before.

She has some noticeable extra pep...not that I really tried.  Next is the programming of the computer.  I may just wait until the 3" pulley is installed before doing that.

Thank you Dan!  As always, you have done a wonderful job!

Cheers, Derek

You should have picked her up this afternoon that way you could of met another Kingston 3800SC Fiero owner. he dropped off his car for me to do some work on it. Very nice Fiero that has a 3800SC with a lot of work done to it including an intercooler and is all bolted up to a heavily modded 5 Speed Getrag. Dan

Getting the PCM programmed tomorrow morning.  Leaving the house at 6:00 AM.   :'(

Hope to make it for the ride in the afternoon!!!!  Fingers crossed I make it in time.  If not, just leave some food out for me to eat and a cot to nap on.   O0

Cheers, Derek

Kewl!  Is this the guy from Kingston???

What kinds of mods are done to it?  What kind of intercooler is it?

Yes he is in the middle of moving in so the car is here being checked over and keep out of his way till he is ready for it. Will see if I can find out which intercooler it is and where he got it from. If you get a chance drop by and see it for your self. Dan

Bad day.  Long story short, while getting my PCM tuned, a piece of weatherstripping that runs along the back window fell into the motor (I meant to fix the damn thing) and took out a belt.  My car is a few hours away out of province for the week as a result.    :'(

That'll teach me.  I saw it coming.  Too bad as the tune was coming along so nicely.  The mods you did Dan were really, REALLY coming together!

Oh well.  It'll all be good.

Cheers, Derek

Derek if you are talking about the trim that was hanging off along the bottom of your rear window that couldn't have been it as I removed it to prevent such problems while the car was here. Plan was to put it back on in the spring for you when it is warm enough to be able to work with it without breaking it. Something else must have caused it. If you want let me know when you are going back for it and I will come to Kingston to go along and see if there is any thing I can see or do to help. Dan

It seems to have happened when I accellerated.  I just thought the accelleration was the final straw that caused the weatherstipping to fall into the engine compartment and take out the belt.

The plan is to travel on Saturday, that way, I can do the rest of the runs to finish the tuning.

Is there a different way to run the belts perhaps???

Cheers, Derek

Hi Dan.

My buddy is going to head to Montreal on Saturday to visit his son, so I'll catch a ride with him then.  When I get the car back to Kingston and stored, perhaps you could come down then and we'll take a look at her where it is nice and dry and protected from the elements, instead of out in the cold and rain.  ;)

Cheers, Derek

Sounds good to me, must be one of the brackets on the alt bent or some thing throwing the pulleys out of alignment.
If you get a chance get the guy who owns the red GT that is here now for a drive the gears have been changed in the getrag and it has been strengthened heavily. Combine that with all the mods on this thing and basically hang on tight this thing will plant you in the seat good and hard. Dan

Its hard to say how much power the engine has ons thing for sure is he has the drive train all matched up quite well which makes a big difference in how the car works. Dan

Dan if you are able to find out in any detail what's been done to the tranny without pulling teeth, I'd appreciate it.

I'm still anticipating finding the 3-4 drop on the four speed to be too wide for comfortable track use.  It should be a little less annoying once the 3800 is done, but...  gah.  Any misbehaving in the twisties with the 2.8 means either run it high & hard in 3rd, or below the power band in 4th.   ::)

The work was done at some tranny place in London Ont. that specializes in modifying trannys. From what I was told the use of a few gears from a quad 4 getrag were used. The owner is going to join our little group so you will be able to get more info once he's on here. Dan
