Title: Broken spark plugs
Post by: 2ML67 on July 01, 2006, 04:10:16 pm
Any one ever had this happen or know best route to remove the rest of the plug. Working on an 85 SE V6 which appears to still have the original spark plugs still in the back side. One came out ok other two had to use a pick and air pressure to clear away enough rust just to be able to put the socket on. Well both p[lugs broke off leaving only the threaded part of the plug still in the head. See photo's they explain better. Dan

Well, I'm sure that you'll be excited to hear this.   ::)

I read 7 articles, and the whole works say that the head has to come off.  If you can't get the rest out and repair via helicoil then the head is toast.   >:(

You don't have to take the head off, but it is safer that way.  I do have a way to take those out, it involves two rods and a wedge(usually a flat head screw driver, but you may need more torque).  Same technique I used to liberate cable and drive back the rear piston on my Mazda.

It's kind of long to explain in type, and I'm kind of busy moving and building, but I'll try to get some time to make some images.

I decided to pull the engine and remove the head, I have a nice spare engine with a mere 105,000km on it with a leaking head gasket so I am going to strip that engine down have the heads freshened up and put them on this older higher milage 2.8. Should make this engine work like new again as slow and poorly powered as they were. Dan

Once the engine was out and had the needed room both plugs came out with little effort and the use of an easy out. Dan
