Title: Pontiac Firefly
Post by: 2ML67 on February 27, 2006, 12:42:11 pm
A friend of mine just finished redoing the body and paint on his girl friend's convertible Firefly. The motor has a lot of miles on it so we are looking into a swap for it. Now big decision got it down to two possible engines either a 4 cyl eco-tech or a nice 3800SC series II. The car is a standard tranny car and will remain that way just need to decide on which way to go all out racer or reliable slightly faster compact. Opinions appreciated. Dan

Hey, that sounds like an excellent swap candidate.. I would stay with the ecotec, its lighter by a lot.. I think that the 3.8 would make the little sprint handle like a slug!!!

It originaly came with a 1.0 3 cyl or a 1.4 4 cyl of 55 hp or better.  The 4 cyl 140+hp  eco-tech would give you almost 3x power increase. A 3800 series 11 is a lot heaver for the 1600 lbs car and would have to be wedged in to the tight engine compartment and with the 5x power increase would be a handfull. Guys have been putting in the 180-300 hp Hayabusa engine and no problem with space. Bottom line --- I would have to side with the eco-tec.

Give it a little stretch and put the L67 behind the driver.   >:D
