I'm studding up a set of tires for this ice weather...what sealant would you recommend ???

If you are in Ontario, last I heard it was illegal to run studded tires on public roads....

ok so how do I seal them up?  ;)

Since we're on the topic of tire studs, lets recommend a good place to go and buy them  ;D

I did a littl reading and it looks like you just cant use them on the highways!

We used to use studded bias ply tires way back when I was young. (Nova Scotia)

The winter tires made to accept studs have little holes in the tread design.  The metal (and now nylon?) studs look kind of like little rivets and are inserted in the hole.  They don't puncture the tire itself, just are imbeded in the rubber block.

Suck on pavement and wear fast.  Used to use them on an ice racing Mini.

Don't stick them thru the tire Boot  ;D

You could just cover up the studded part (on the inside) with a liner and use a tube.  Depending on what you are planning on doing with them.

Don't take that literally, Boot.

In most cases when ever you see the Ontario Ministry of Transportation say "highway," read "any public road."  Seriously.

Just for shits 'n giggles, here's the complete definition of what the MTO means when it says the word "highway":

"highway" includes a common and public highway, street, avenue, parkway, driveway, square, place, bridge, viaduct or trestle, any part of which is intended for or used by the general public for the passage of vehicles and includes the area between the lateral property lines thereof; ("voie publique")

Hey I still have four of those somewhere...  quite a reasonable amount of tread left on them too!  Funny looking things by today's standards.

I'm gonna try it out and see how well they do!

Heres a thought! use a pop rivet gun and rivet right into tire
yes  i know you will then have a hundred hole for air to leak
out  but try the foam tire repair you put in threw valve stem.
just maybe it will seal it up! maybe a couple application.







so sad to bad you even have to drive it in the winter

just use regualr rim sealer.

The rivits are a little too flimsy for me....I'm thinking more like massive fawk off spikes ...like....pull a burn out on ice and snap an axle spikes!  ;D

I got a set of used Yokohama Avids (freebie, zip, zero, notta) but the tread is not deep enugh to hold the studs without going through the tire. I think because they were free I'm going to take the tires off the rims and screw the spikes right in there and then use two things...1) old bike tubes and silicone to seal around the spikes and then 2) Motomaster jack in a can tire sealer....see what that combo does for me!

If it all goes to hell and I just end up chewing up the tires I'll let you guys know!

I see 4 flat tires in your very near furture if you do that.. plus that tire sealant is not meant as a long term fix.. its meant to get the car to the shop to be fixed properly.

Three main problems 1) yes they are illegal and if caught it will cost also if you throw one of those studs and hit another car you will be held accountable. 2)your tires will either go flat or need air on a very regular basis. and 3) good luck trying to ballance them afterward or else have fun feeling the vibrations from seriously unbalanced tires. All in all very bad idea that is why those tires were outlawed years ago. Want good traction buy good winter tires and drive according to weather conditions.

Snow, snow, and more snow!  Not sure if it’s just me, but I can't get enough of driving in that stuff, what a blast!  Amazing how time passes when you’re having fun.  Its true that nothing beats a good snow tire, but next week, they'll be snow tires with studs.  ;D  Found one of our parts distributors that stock them.  Figure what the heck....the tires have holes for them, and with the added safety, might as well.
