Am trying to decide on my next engine the 3800SC is very appealing to me but I am having trouble finding out the HP and Torque specs of the various 3800 engines. Also have found a 3.4L in a 2001 Grand Am that also looks promising so next will be to find out more about it as well. Any info would be appreciated.

Okay, this is just off the top of my head so it's apt to be jumbled up.
Eric (Doughboy) here has a series I 3800 that he is (?) putting into his car this winter.  Try him first.

Swap - talk to skitime (PFF) skitime@ptd.net . His name is Dave Horst. I have bought some stuff from him and he is a great guy. He is a shop teacher, his 3800 s/c series II cost about $us 2500.  with a new crate motor.  He has managed to hide most of the wiring and spent weeks routing belts and designing pulley systems.  He is a PERFECTIONIST.

ECM - TK (PFF) Terry from California.  He is THE guru on 3800 chip burning. (way beyond my understanding so don't go there).

skitime and Terry are often on PFF chat around 10 o'clock. As well as Phil* (3800 car for a few years), Jelly (Anthony Cook from Nova Scotia..excellent mechanic) and others in the know.  Have fun!  Grin

Speedo - rockcrawl (PFF) he can make or show what is needed to get the Fiero vss feed the ecm the right signal to operate the speedo. (See above...techno dummy here)

C  normal  88-90 Log type intake  165/210 Huh
L  normal  91-94 Tuned manifold (1)  170/220  12.30
1  supercharged  ??-93 two belts, SC at top  205/260  Huh
1  supercharged  94-95 two belts, SC at top  225/275  12.72
Current 3800 Series II
Code  Induction  years  visual characteristics  hp/torque (ft-lbs) imbalance (in oz)(2)
K  normal  95- current Large Plastic cover, roller rockers 205/230  21.25
??  supercharged  96- current ??, roller rockers 245/280  Huh
Note 1: early VIN L's intake was grey metal, later was black plastic
Note 2: see flywheel drawing for relative location of imbalance.
Note 3: Series II information applies to the C/G/H chassis. W chassis has 195 hp, F body (Camaro/Firebird) has 200 hp

Also, all 3800 Series I have two exhaust ports close together and one further away.  3800 Series II: all exhaust ports and equally spaced from each other.

This info may be out dated but close.  Adding a smaller pulley to the s/c is a normal mod and good for about 25hp.
more engine info:
http://www.clubgp.com/forum/index.asp Obviously these guys know the motor.

That will get you started.  Does it seem obvious that I would LOVE one of these?

Oh! You'll need the motor/harness, s/c, ECM ,tranny (easier on the electrical end).  I think I have a list of axles somewhere.

BTW is that 3.4 an aluminum 3400 or a DOHC?

Thanks FieroBUZZ for the info it will come in handy as for the 3.4L I haven't seen it yet. The local wreckers I deal most with told me about it and that it would be in next week some time. I will have to check it out then. This should a be fun build. They say the hardest is the wiring while I may not be big on computers after nearly 12 years of experience doing electronics on aircraft and many more on other electronics it shouldn't be too hard.

The twin cam 3.4 is a real revver.  Kind of like my old Fiat 124 spider. The only bad thing I can think of is it is a high maintenance thing and buying a used one may be a bit iffy.  There was an Olds for sale with one near Brockville. It had new heads, belts and pulleys, so I assume it broke a timing belt.

If the 3400 is the same as the one in the minivans, I might avoid it.  Everyone I mentioned that to said it was a real POS.  (All either car people or those with the motor).  The 3800 either n/a or s/c sounds sweet though.
