Brian...  here's a photo of the two side-by-side.  The one I picked up from Alex is the shorter one.

I measured the difference, but forgot to write it down.   Embarrassed  It's an inch plus or minus a bit.

So the bend is the same, just the upper lenght. The one that I put in my 85  is straight wigh no bend.

Mine has been trimmed at the yellow line and the circled bit removed.  The stub was rewelded onto the shifter.

Was it an 84 shifter that you shortened, or one of the longer ones?

The height of the 84 definitely is more comfortable for me than the 85+, but given that it's so easy to do I think I'm going to cut the "s" out of one of the extra 85+ shifters we have and see if the reduced height & and different reach is more comfortable yet.

Mine was an 84 so the stub is very short. 

I find the shaft really fat. If doing it again I would use a lever from a different car with a smaller diameter.  Bent and welded to personal feel.  Make it a lot easier to fit a nice aftermarket shifter knob.
